The Instructional Designer works under moderate supervision to design engaging learning activities, compelling courses, supplementary learning materials or convert technical material into appealing graphics. This individual must be able to demonstrate and utilize effective project management, course and graphic development, and evaluation skills for the HORNE Government Services (GS) practice group. The Instructional Designer must have extensive knowledge of graphic design, instructional design theories, practice and methods. The ideal candidate is someone who can take direction from written or spoken ideas and convert them seamlessly into images, layouts and other designs. The Instructional Designer will participate in collaborative discussions to ensure uniformity in GS documents for internal and external clients.

 Primary Responsibilities:

The Instructional Designer will support continual innovation in training materials and delivery methods and support the transparent exchange of resources by performing the following:

  • Create engaging learning activities and compelling course content that enhances retention and knowledge transfer
  • Work with subject matter experts and identify target audience’s training needs
  • Identify and state instructional end goals and create content that matches them
  • Visualize instructional graphics, the user interface and the finished product
  • Conduct instructional research and analysis on learners and contexts
  • Apply tested instructional design theories, practice and methods
  • Provide exercises and activities that enhance the learning process
  • Create supporting material/media (audio, video, simulations, role plays, games etc.)
  • Implement criteria used to judge learner’s performance and develop assessment instruments
  • Organize and oversee task assignments for subject matter experts and training content writers based on instructional design as agreed upon with project teams, Community of Practice team, or other key stakeholders
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on training material and methodology
  • Review, proofread, and edit materials to ensure they are grammatically correct, factual, and in approved format
  • Proactively manage assigned tasks/workflow daily with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and listening skills; the ability to think ahead, take initiative, and stay up-to-speed with constantly shifting priorities

The Instructional Designer will support the communication of HORNE Government Service practice group services through imagery and streamlined content by performing the following:

  • Preparing visual presentations by designing art and copy layouts
  • Using the Adobe Cloud suite and similar tools to create documents for external clients
  • Assist in creating marketing material for internal and external clients
  • Using graphic design expertise to polish brochures, resumes, templates, etc.
  • Illustrates concept by designing rough layout of art and copy regarding arrangement, size, type size and style and related aesthetic concepts
  • Consult with our marketing department to create cohesive designs that reflect HORNE’s brand guidelines and those of our external clients
  • Performing other responsibilities as required by management
Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in developing e-learning and classroom training programs and content in a professional environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Instructional Design, or a closely related field
  • Extensive experience in InDesign and the Adobe Creative Suite is required; Strong working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint and Prezi is strongly preferred
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize competing projects and assignments with little supervision  
  • Must be self-directed and detail oriented in completing assigned projects and tasks
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and pay high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Able to work effectively in a deadline oriented environment which could require extended hours
  • Able to work on weekends occasionally with quick turn-a-round deadlines
